02/17/2016 Academic Technology Directors Meeting – Public Notes

  1. EMAIL: All users are migrating to Office365 cloud servers – over half the University have successfully moved to date. A&S personnel will migrate on Feb 23-25.
  2. CLOUD: Box and Office 365 now provide cloud storage solutions for University personnel.
  3. CLASSROOMS: Over 60 spaces are scheduled to upgrade or install during the summer of 2016.
  4. YEAR END ALERT: Requests for networked technology must be reviewed prior to purchase approval and the fiscal year-end gets very busy, very fast; submit any requests early!

10/20/2015 Academic Technology Directors Meeting – Public Notes

  1. EMAIL: Students accounts will soon start to migrate to the Microsoft Cloud service; faculty and staff accounts are expected to migrate next summer. This should be seamless with users not noticing the difference, except the 50GB mailbox size – a huge increase.
  2. CANVAS CATALOG: A site being created to offer self-paced online instruction.
  3. HPC CLOUDThe Academic and Research Computing Services group is pilot testing high performance computing jobs in the cloud using Amazon Web Services. Four researchers are participating in the pilot which runs through January. 
  4. LYNDA.COM: A campus license will soon be available.

July 15, 2015 – Academic Technology Directors Meeting – Public Notes

  1. VIDEO: Kaltura purchased and will first be integrated into Canvas, then the CMS.
  2. SOFTWARE: The AppCenter was upgraded; Windows users must use Internet Explorer version 10 to install software. http://www.baylor.edu/appcenter
  3. SOFTWARE: Adobe Acrobat underwent many changes and is now called Acrobat Pro DC (da cloud, maybe?). The pro version is available to all University faculty and staff computers and at a reduced price for student or home use.
  4. HARDWARE: New Dell Ultrabooks are being introduced – lighter but slower.
  5. APPLE: Any apple using OS 10.8.5 or older will need to be upgraded soon.
  6. CLASSROOM: Apple TV units are now in conflict with network security measures; solutions are being sought.
  7. SOFTWARE: Office 2016 for Mac is now in the Office portal and a DVD version should be in the bookstore in September for students.

June 17, 2015 – Academic Technology Directors Meeting – Public Notes

  1. EMAIL: Enhancements are underway to improve the student, staff, and faculty email accounts (providing larger mailbox quotas in the process).
  2. LMS: Canvas Transition – FACULTY ALERT – Blackboard goes away after this Fall term (in late December, 2015).  Excellent training options are available.  http://canvas.baylor.edu .
  3. VIDEO: Kaltura is a new campus offering for all users. First integration is into Canvas for academic needs; more to come.
  4. CLASSROOMS: A four-year plan is in place to equip all University classrooms with the technology they need. Users should forward requests to Classroom Technology Services – cts@baylor.edu
  5. SOFTWARE: MAT LAB is now free to all students and employees (previously, students had to purchase the application).
