AirBear In The Classroom

Every classroom should have wireless coverage, but as students bring more devices, and faculty come to rely on wi-fi … capacity and reliability issues may arise.

It is very important for users to report wi-fi problems to the Help Desk (710-HELP).

Even after hours, leave a recording with your NAME, LOCATION, TIME and the TYPES of devices involved. These data points will help determine solutions and prioritize improvements.  #squeakywheel

Let’s discuss the use of classroom wi-fi in the comments below … a more pedagogical discussion. (Please still send problem reports to the HelpDesk.)

Bennett Review

Bennett Auditorium users provided good ideas for the remodeling – here is a design update with some observations. Pictures below … please comment your thoughts!

  • Currently Bennett seat 320; the revised plan allows for 306 seats plus 6 accessible locations
  • An enlarged stage will cover the wrap-around stairs; steps will be added house left and the house right aisle will be a ramp from the entrance to the stage
  • The “wing walls” on the stage will be removed (air return grates will be in the floor)
  • One large center projection screen will provide primary content
  • Two side screens provide optional displays for secondary content
  • Center floor furniture is removed
  • A classroom console will be “up stage right” (not pictured)
  • Aisles are re-positioned to reduce numbers of seats per row
(Although the house right section is only served by one aisle)

See the pictures! This first one is not the same angle or distance, but gives a comparison.

Update 4/10/17: This remodeling project will not be funded for this summer. Time for more input and thought!

Two Screens – Different Content?

dualscreen-c2Any need to display two screens (with different content) in classrooms?

Rarely do students need two screens to see the same content … would faculty use dual screens to display independent sources? For example, the main content plus secondary content such as white-board notes (via document camera), web-sites to support lecture notes, polling or back-channel comments or Q&A feed, associated video, or video chat.

In particular, we are wondering about the expected renovation of Draper 152, but the question has value for any classroom.

Draper 130 – Bennett

ORIGINALLY POSTED APRIL 2015:
We welcome your comments on how to improve the functionality and aesthetic quality of Bennett Auditorium (Draper 172) – a 320 seat auditorium serving large classes, lectures, general meetings, campus visits, summer orientation, small productions and the like.  Please comment – What works well?  What needs work? Dream big.

SEPTEMBER 2016: Last year’s post caught some attention and we read good ideas on improving Bennett. The project was delayed, but is now back on the drawing board and a design team is looking at options. So, we fudged the date to pop this conversation back to the top.

What is being planned? Nothing is decided yet, but we hear:

  • the stage will likely be lowered or removed
  • the stage back walls might get a new angle
  • the built-in furniture will be replaced with a typical console/lectern
  • the seats will be replaced (still fixed)
  • the aisles could change
  • new lighting and sound
  • not sure how to use the (old) projection room

Last time around, you mentioned:

  • shorter rows (more aisles to proctor and for ease of access) – seems possible
  • more front walking space – stage redesign smaller furniture in plans
  • whiteboards – planners do not see how this will work due to room size; however, we can add a document camera and two sides screens – helpful?
  • better video – can do (this was improved this summer, but will be again)
  • surround sound – not feasible, but a robust audio system with subwoofers is
  • using the stage exit halls/doors for normal exiting – I don’t know
  • seats which turn – I doubt this is on the list, but see how it was done at Iowa State

What else needs to be considered? Do you have any issues with the lobby, the entry doors, the empty room at the back, lighting controls? Anyone want windows? Can we give up seats for more aisles? Do we need electric power among the seats?

Would three screens be of use – a main screen for primary content with two side screens to show secondary content (notes off a doc-cam, polling or back-channel communications, timers, additional websites)?

Now is the time to discuss as the designers are making their plans. Click here, or the gold comment bubble above, to reply.

(By the way, this could occur in the Summer of 2017 or 2018.)

Apple TV in Classrooms

appletvThe 30+ shared BSB classrooms and a few others have Apple TV units as a presentation source. There are some bugs to work through, so let Classroom Technology know if you are having difficulties. They are great to display student presentations.

HDMI

VGA HDMI comparison

(images from wikipedia.org)

To use a personal device (laptop, tablet, smartphone) in most classrooms today requires adapting the output to HDMI. (This used to be VGA which is now mostly gone.) Most modern laptops have an HDMI output on them.

Adaptors are in some rooms for common devices, but faculty are encouraged to be “self-contained” with the specific adaptor needed for their device. Either the CTS or A&S Tech consultants will be help with your specific device.
