The background of the song “Aa ope lo ye” is quite ambiguous, and the writer is anonymous. However, it is a popular Yoruba thanksgiving song that has been in use for many decades. It is a song that expresses thanksgiving unto God for the gift and preservation of life. The mood is that of gratitude, and it is mostly used in worship services during praise and thanksgiving times. Theologically, it embodies a thankful and grateful heart unto God for his faithfulness in preserving His children, as expressed by the words of King Hezekiah in the book of Isaiah 38:18-19, “Only the living can praise the Lord.” It is used in church worship services, especially in the South-Western part of Nigeria, as a song of thanks unto God for the gift of life.
Lyrics
Aa ope lo ye, Aa ope lo ye, (Ah He deserves thanks, Ah He deserves thanks)
Mo wa laye, mo wa laye, (I am alive, hale and hearty)
Aa ope lo ye. (Ah He deserves thanks)
