Justin Thompson is a PhD candidate in English at the University of Maryland. His dissertation, Women Writing Violence: Genre and Gender in the Age of High Imperialism, argues that women adapted feminized genres to intervene in debates about imperial expansion. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books and he has a forthcoming co-written article about Australian emigrant communities in Paraguay in the nineteenth century.
