Baylor ProSales Announces Results of Baylor Business Ethics Competition (BBEC)

Baylor’s Center for Professional Selling is excited to announce the winners for the 2023 Baylor Business Ethics Competition (BBEC), a ProSales program-specific competition designed to challenge ProSales students with ethical dilemmas evident in sales and distribution. This year’s case challenged students to address the ethical issues associated with 100% salaried vs. 100% commissioned sales compensation plans. Half of the student teams addressed the 100% salary approach while the other teams addressed the 100% commission compensation approach.

The ProSales BBEC engaged 108 students on 27 teams. Students were assigned to their competition teams to ensure that each team included freshmen/sophomores, juniors and seniors as well as both males and females. Team-level GPAs were normalized across the teams for fairness. Given the two different perspectives (100% Salary vs. 100% commission), ProSales students identified the ethical challenges associated with the two approaches for a company’s sales compensation strategy. The top three winning teams for this year’s BBEC include:

  • Chloe Kelly, Ben Montag, Caleb Paschke, & Ethan Wiley (pictured here)
  • Collin Bass, Gabriel Garcia, Grace Simmons, & Kate Sralla
  • Meagan Griggs, Jaden Mazzola, Benj Nopper, & Tyler Peterson
Top Individual Speakers: (From left to right) Gracie Miller, Michael Starling, Preston Jones

Top individual speakers were Preston Jones, Gracie Miller, and Michael Starling who were chosen by their room judges. Participants competed in three rooms with four judges per room, comprised of nine business executives and three Baylor ProSales faculty members. Representatives from Million Air, Nucor, and PwC served as the executive judges.

“BBEC is a 36-hour competition that incorporates ethics into real world scenarios that challenge students to deliver on a deadline. Each team of four students has different strengths, weaknesses, and skill levels but it’s how all of that comes together that makes this competition amazing. I still remember when I was a sophomore in ProSales and was terrified walking into my first BBEC competition. Two years ago, it was my senior leader who helped coach me through the process and made me feel confident. As a senior, I now remember those moments and want to empower the students who are following behind me. We put that into action this year and practiced perfecting our presentation so many times that by Friday morning we didn’t need our slides anymore, nervousness was at an all-time low, and we were both excited and proud of the work that we had produced.  Each person was able to operate within their individual strengths and it goes to show how amazing the results are when an entire team pitches in, pulls their weight, and practices repeatedly in order to get the win. Thank you to the ProSales faculty and staff for pouring years of coaching into each of us and for providing opportunities like BBEC. I’m grateful for competitions that teach valuable lessons that apply directly to industry,” shared Caleb Paschke, captain of the 1st place team.
