Baylor’s Center for Professional Selling (ProSales) announced the winners of the 2022 Baylor Business Ethics Competition (BBEC), a ProSales program-specific competition designed to challenge ProSales students with ethical dilemmas evident in sales and distribution.

The top three winning teams include:

  • Katie Boatwright, Matt Ochall, Caleb Paschke and Grace Smith
  • Joseph Crump, Jax Lewis, Lachlan McGregor and Haley West
  • Jordon Ermentraut, Matea Floryance, Keaton Kechter and Jackson Schueller

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to lead such a dedicated and creative team in the BBEC,” Matt Ochall, captain of the first-place team, said. “I appreciate this competition and its emphasis on teaching students how to navigate ethical dilemmas when they enter the workforce.”

This year’s case positioned students centrally in the unfolding drama related to the Ford Motor Company’s announcement regarding the distribution strategy for their electric vehicles. Some student teams presented taking the manufacturer’s point of view, while other teams presented from the position of the Ford Dealer Network.

The BBEC engaged 84 students on 21 teams who analyzed a June 2022 announcement by the Ford Motor Company to redesign their sales and distribution strategy for their electric vehicle products. Given the two perspectives—manufacturer vs. distribution channel—ProSales students identified the ethical challenges facing the two major parties in this new go-to-market strategy for Ford.

“BBEC provides students with a scenario about an organizational ethical dilemma. It is up to each team to uncover the unethical practices to produce a comprehensive solution to the C-Suite,” Ochall said. “As a team, we saw the value in identifying and leveraging the strengths of each member to create a solution that navigates ethical risks and promotes collaboration between the parties.”

Participants competed in three rooms with four judges per room, comprised of nine business executives and three Baylor ProSales faculty members. Representatives from BMC, PwC and Patterson Dental served as the executive judges. Kelsey Boehme, Mahak Rajwani and Haley West were chosen by their room judges as top individual speakers for the event.

Ochall is thankful for the opportunity to develop these professional skills and better position himself for future employers.

“This is my favorite competition because we are able to highlight our strengths and personal differences to succeed as a team,” he said.
