When Doug Dixon bid last fall on an item in the ProSales Silent Auction, “Dinner with Coach Mulkey,” he had no idea what might transpire during the 2018-19 basketball season. The President and CEO of Texas Life, Dixon commented, “Little did I know when I was told that I had the winning bid last fall, that I’d be taking my senior leadership team to dinner with the coach of the NCAA champions, the AP Coach of the Year, and just four days after the championship game! This was really special.”

The Lady Bears posted an 82-81 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last week in Tampa. That win made Coach Kim Mulkey the third coach to win three or more NCAA Division I Championships. Previously, Mulkey made NCAA history in 2005 by becoming the first person to have won championship titles as a player, assistant coach and now head coach. She made history again as she led the Lady Bears in a perfect season in 2012. In her 20 years at Baylor, Mulkey has been instrumental in revitalizing and lifting the team to the fighting force they are today.

The dinner was scheduled for the Silent Auction winners before the basketball season began. The date chosen was four days after the national championship game, as Dixon commented, “Coach Mulkey had to be tired after wrapping up the championship game on Sunday and appearing on Good Morning America in NYC on Thursday morning [the dinner was Thursday evening]. Yet she was very engaging and genuine.” Also participating that evening was Assistant Coach Johnny Derrickson. The entire group enjoyed Cajun food while talking about the game, the season and the outlook for next year. “It is obvious that Coach Mulkey cares deeply for her players, and that that has contributed to her great success over the years.”

This Dinner with Coach Mulkey was just one of the prizes available in last year’s ProSales Silent Auction. The auction occurs annually and boasts a wide variety of items, experiences and gifts. The winning bidder, Dixon, noted, “I always gravitate to the experience-based items that I can share with others…such as the dinner with Coach Mulkey.” More than 100 items were available in the auction. The auction provides developmental benefits for the ProSales students as they are responsible for sourcing and attaining the auction items and the funds raised support the ProSales program.
