Description: Early hymnody within the emerging Baptist churches in Scotland was influenced, primarily, by the relatively recent events of the Scottish Reformation; it was also influenced by developments south of the border (in England). Neither influence was entirely theological in nature, although such would usually be argued. There was, perhaps inevitably, a cultural influence and, at times, an interweaving of cultural and theological influences. The purpose of this paper is to explore the separate influences and, where possible, the ways in which they interweave.
