Microsoft removed Equation Editor (Equation 3.0) from the Office suite in late 2017 due to security vulnerabilities. To create or edit equations, we recommend you install MathType Lite.
Actually, this installs the full version; after 30 days you will be prompted to buy a full license; we recommend you DENY the upgrade purchase and you will retain the LITE version which is exactly IDENTICAL to the Microsoft Equation Editor.
If you want/need the full version, an individual academic license is $57. MathType is approved to install by Baylor ITS.
Please use the comments to discuss with other users.
Please try this as an alternative and let us know if it works or what you think. Just works in “new” versions of Word, I think.

Wiris removed the MathType lite option (Equation Editor) in 2019 and users now have to purchase the $40/yr academic license to retain program. We are looking at bulk order options as well as alternative products.
PURCHASING. After the trial period, the free, lite version may be adequate for most users. Should you decide to buy the full version, the individual academic licence is $57 (future upgrades $37). A departmental license may make sense if you have more than 14 users per department. A College/University license would require hundred of users.
For READING the equations, it looks like users need to have the free font set from the dessci.ms website – http://www.dessci.com/en/dl/fonts/getfont.asp
Some of the research journals we publish in require that equations be type set using MathType. I would really like to be able to use the advanced features such as Toggle TeX and inserting equation numbers.
If these features are in the lite version, you are good to go. If they are in FULL, but not LITE, you are good for 30 days and we will need to review our licensing options. I’ll post them once I get a reply from the vendor.

Looks like anyone may install the Windows or Mac version.
I would like to have the version to be able to type math formulas. Actually it is needed for my course and preparation for the quizzes and tests.
Let us know how the trial works or if you have questions.
