Dr. Nguyen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience of Baylor University. Before joining Baylor in 2022, Dr. Nguyen was a Project Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute in the Department of Neuroscience and in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Taffe. Dr. Nguyen received his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and in the laboratories of Drs. Michael Forster and Michael Gatch. He received his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Nguyen is a recipient of the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research program currently focuses on the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of substance use and addiction. Dr. Nguyen has significant experience in rodent-based behavioral models, such as intravenous self-administration, drug discrimination, locomotor activity assessment, and intracranial self-stimulation. Dr. Nguyen’s work has been recognized by scientific research organizations including the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Mariana Dejeux

Mariana Dejeux is a third year Ph.D. student in Baylor’s Psychology program. She received her BS and MS from the University of Texas at San Antonio where she helped identify novel targets for reducing drug seeking behaviors and investigated the role of dopamine during early Pavlovian learning. She spent her first two years at Baylor studying intermittent sucrose consumption and the effects of alcohol drinking on stress responses in mice. She is currently interested in researching drug withdrawal and exploring potential relationships between opioids and perineuronal nets. Outside of the lab, Mariana enjoys trying out new restaurants and buying new plants to add to her constantly decreasing collection.

Blake Reeves

Blake Reeves is a first-year PhD student in Baylor’s Psychology program. His time as a researcher began as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Nguyen Lab. Upon earning his B.S. in Neuroscience from Baylor University, he continued to work in the lab as a lab technician, investigating the role of extracellular matrix structures in the maintenance of opioid withdrawal. He is currently researching opioid withdrawal and its potential relationship to dynorphin A expression, with an additional interest in investigating the effects of exercise on drug-seeking and withdrawal behaviors. Blake enjoys sailing, playing musical instruments, and loves cooking and baking for others. He also takes pride in brewing the perfect cup of coffee or tea.

Andriy Fomin

Andriy Fomin

Andriy Fomin is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience of Baylor University. He earned his M.A. degree in Psychological Sciences at Montclair State University, where he investigated the question of how rapid antidepressants modulate the mechanisms of serotonin neurotransmission in major depressive disorder. His current interests lie in the biological basis of addiction and its intersection with stress and anxiety. Andriy is excited to learn new cutting-edge bioanalytical and biobehavioral methods and techniques as the Lab continues to expand its set of research tools and scientific approaches.

Jacklyn Staffeld is a Ph.D. student in Baylor’s Psychology program under the behavioral neuroscience track. She received her B.S. in psychology at Eastern Michigan University where she was involved in the McNair Scholars program. Through the McNair Scholars program, she was introduced to the learning mechanisms and neural pathways involved in drug seeking behaviors at the University of Michigan. She is now pursuing the bi-directional interaction between drug use and neural circuitry. Jacklyn intends to use her Ph.D. to continue pursuing various perspectives in addiction research and use these discoveries to influence public policy as it relates to drug use. Jacklyn enjoys reading, listening to music, and speaking to animals in an abnormally high pitch voice.

Nathan Cheng is a research fellow with a double major in neuroscience from Orange County, California. His interests revolve around the long-term physiological and behavioral consequences of opioid and cannabinoid abuse. He also enjoys playing obscure sports like Kendo and rowing. Under Nguyen Lab’s guidance, he is grateful for the opportunity to improve as both a researcher and an individual.

My name is Sri Kasaram. I am currently the Vice President of Membership for the Psychology Club. I also work with a Non-profit Organization called Vibha to tutor refugees. I will also be a Learning Assistant for Dr. Oladapo’s Introduction to Biology Class. I’m excited to help out with the lab and specifically ways to connect neuroinflammation  opioid addiction.

Aliyah Ogden

Aliyah Ogden is a Science Research Fellow from Algonquin, IL. Although her primary interest is in neuroscience, she is also pursuing a minor in religion. On campus, Aliyah is the social media chair for the Neuroscience Student Association and is a Crane Scholar. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a PhD and continue research in the field of neuroscience. In her free time, she loves writing poetry, reading, going out for coffee, and spending time with friends. She is looking forward to growing as a researcher in The Neuroscience of Addiction Lab and learning about the specific neurobiology involved in drug abuse.

Samuel Moutos is a junior majoring in neuroscience with a minor in biology in the honors program. Samuel is from Little Rock, AR. After graduating he plans on attending medical school and pursuing a career in surgery. Outside of the lab he is a member of AED and NSA. His work in the lab includes developing immunohistochemistry techniques to better understand the effect of opioids in animal models of addiction.

Felise Bressler is from Katy, Texas. She is a University Scholars major with concentrations in neuroscience and psychology and a minor in sociology. As a McNair Scholar, Felise hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience to begin a career researching neural circuitry underlying psychiatric disorders. She is passionate about mental health education and advocacy, which can be seen through her involvement in Active Minds and the Undergraduate Health and Wellness Advisory Board. Outside of Baylor, Felise works as a tutor for The Cove to support the academic success of homeless youth in Waco. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, being outdoors, and spending time with friends.

Melody Golbarani is from Dallas, Texas. She is a B.S. Biology student concentrated in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a minor in Spanish, on the premed track. Melody joined the Nguyen Lab to further her knowledge on the mechanisms involved in substance abuse and addiction. Outside of lab, Melody is involved in The Rural Health equity research collaborative, to provide education to impoverished communities. She is a member of Baylor’s Student Health Advisory Council, as well as of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she serves on the public relations and marketing committee. Outside of campus, Melody volunteers as a power-math tutor for Waco elementary schools and facilitates a junior youth empowerment program. For fun, Melody enjoys doing pilates, playing pickle ball, and trying new coffee shops!

Joanne Kwak is from Memphis, Tennessee. She is a B.S. Biology student concentrated in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry on the pre-med track. She’s excited to be apart of the Nguyen lab because of the neurobiological work as well as testing substance dependence. Outside of this lab, she is part of Baylor BURST organization where she is in the academic committee. She is also a volunteer at Ascension Providence Hospital here in Waco, TX. She works as a lab and research student at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative for the Astrophysics, Space Physics, and Engineering Research Center. Back at home, Joanne spends her time volunteering at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur’s Children’s Hospital.

Arjun Trehan is a junior majoring in Neuroscience on the Pre-Med Track from Allen, Texas. After graduating from Baylor, he plans to attend medical school in hopes of becoming a pediatric oncologist. Outside of the lab, Arjun is involved in Bears Medical Student Association (BMSA), where he is on the Research and Internship committee, Neuroscience Student Association (NSA), and is a volunteer at the Ascension Providence Hospital. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends, playing golf, and watching movies.

Sophia Wright is a freshman University Scholars major with concentrations in neuroscience, biochemistry, and philosophy. She is also on the pre-med track and a member of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core. Sophia is a committed member of BRH choir and the Medical Ethics Discussion Society and is a Getterman Scholar. Upon graduation, Sophia plans to complete an MD-PhD program and pursue a career in neuroscience research. In her free time, Sophia enjoys baking, playing board games, and long-distance running

Evan Farach

Evan Farach is currently in his third year at Baylor majoring in Neuroscience on the Pre-Medical track with minors in Biochemistry and Business Administration. Upon graduation, Evan plans to attend medical school in pursuit of a career in neurosurgery. Evan joined Dr. Nguyen’s lab to investigate the complex physiological processes behind addiction. Through his involvement with the lab, he hopes to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how the brain functions in order to better prepare himself for a career in the medical field. Outside of the lab, Evan works overnight in Baylor Scott & White’s emergency department as a medical transcriptionist. He also works for the department of Psychology and Neuroscience as a Student Ambassador, is a TA for the Learning and Behavior Lab, a Prehealth Mentor, and serves on Alpha Epsilon Delta’s executive board as a New Member Educator. Some of his hobbies include photography, working out, and modifying his car.

Sarah Jewanee is a Junior from Houston, TX pursuing her B.S in Neuroscience with minor in Biochemistry on the Pre-MD/Ph.D route. Her intrigue led her to the Nguyen Lab, where she is interested in the neurobiological mechanisms of opioid use and misuse. In the future, she hopes to specialize in pediatric patients that suffer from neurodevelopmental disease. Sarah is also part of the McNair Scholars program. Beyond the lab, she takes the role of Academic Chair of the Neuroscience Student Association and serves as the Fundraising Chair of her sorority, Delta Kappa Delta Sorority Inc. She enjoys spending her free time with her family/friends, trying new coffee shops, and playing with her dog, Cookie!

Danielle Sogbesan is a senior from Houston, Texas, pursuing a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in French. She plans on attending graduate school after graduation in 2024 to obtain her Ph.D. in a Behavioral Neuroscience Program. She joined the Nguyen lab because she is interested in exploring the mechanisms that are involved in the development of substance use disorders and addiction. Outside of the lab, she is the Vice-President of the Baylor NAACP, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated., a student worker in the Psychology and Neuroscience Department Office.

Justin Truong is currently a Junior at Baylor University, pursuing a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Biochemistry and is on the pre-medicine track. He is from Arlington, Texas and plans to attend medical school after graduation in hopes of a career in adolescent/child psychiatry. Justin has joined the Nguyen lab in interest of learning the complex neurobiological behaviors that stem from drug seeking addictions and substance abuse disorders. Outside of the lab, he is on the officer board for the Vietnamese Student Association as the historian, social committee member for the Multicultural Association of Pre-health Students (MAPS), and serves as a Pipeline Club volunteer/mentor through MAPS at the G.W. Carver middle school for their afterschool program. His hobbies include basketball, photography, and the aftermarket automotive industry.

Kaitlyn Rojas is a first-year student at Baylor pursuing a B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Biochemistry. After graduating from Baylor, she plans to pursue an M.D.-Ph.D. program to work as a physician and scientist, where she hopes to focus her research on both addiction mechanisms and chronic pain management. Outside of the Nguyen Lab, Kaitlyn is on the Communications Committee for the Medical Ethics Discussion Society. She also volunteers through Loaves of Love and R-HERC. In her free time, she enjoys reading, journaling, and listening to music.

Hamid Koroni

Hamid Koroni

Hamid Koroni is the Nguyen Lab’s first alumnus and will be attending the John Sealy School of Medicine at UTMB Galveston. Hamid served as one of the lab’s first laboratory technicians and a source of guidance for undergraduate students and their interests in pursuing medicine. Hamid is currently interested in either Neurology or Emergency Medicine but has an open mind as for what specialities in the future may pique his career interests.
