Dr. Nguyen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience of Baylor University. Before joining Baylor in 2022, Dr. Nguyen was a Project Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute in the Department of Neuroscience and in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Taffe. Dr. Nguyen received his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and in the laboratories of Drs. Michael Forster and Michael Gatch. He received his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Nguyen is a recipient of the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research program currently focuses on the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of substance use and addiction. Dr. Nguyen has significant experience in rodent-based behavioral models, such as intravenous self-administration, drug discrimination, locomotor activity assessment, and intracranial self-stimulation. Dr. Nguyen’s work has been recognized by scientific research organizations including the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Society for Neuroscience.

Mariana Dejeux

Mariana Dejeux

Mariana Dejeux is a fifth year Ph.D. student in Baylor’s Psychology program. She received her BS and MS from the University of Texas at San Antonio where she helped identify novel targets for reducing drug seeking behaviors and investigated the role of dopamine during early Pavlovian learning. She spent her first two years at Baylor studying intermittent sucrose consumption and the effects of alcohol drinking on stress responses in mice. She is currently interested in researching drug tolerance and exploring potential relationships between opioids and perineuronal nets. Outside of the lab, Mariana enjoys trying out new restaurants and buying new plants to add to her constantly decreasing collection.

Felise Bressler

Felise Bressler

Felise Bressler is from Katy, Texas. She earned her B.A. from Baylor University as a University Scholar with concentrations in neuroscience and psychology and a minor in sociology. Felise hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience to begin a career researching neural circuitry underlying psychiatric disorders. She is passionate about mental health education and advocacy. Felise works as a tutor for The Cove to support the academic success of homeless youth in Waco. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, being outdoors, and spending time with friends.

Chris Wernette

Chris Wernette

Chris Wernette earned his B.A. from Baylor University in Psychology with a minor in Spanish and is from Houston, Texas. Chris joined the Nguyen Lab to pursue his interest in the formation of substance use disorder, particularly opioid use disorders, and to better understand the physiological changes that occur in the brain in the wake of addiction. Chris plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Pharmacology, continuing to explore the world of the brain and drugs. Outside of Baylor, Chris loves to play golf and tennis, write songs, and play music with his band.

Nathan Cheng is a research fellow with a double major in neuroscience from Orange County, California. His interests revolve around the long-term physiological and behavioral consequences of opioid and cannabinoid abuse. He also enjoys playing obscure sports like Kendo and rowing. Under Nguyen Lab’s guidance, he is grateful for the opportunity to improve as both a researcher and an individual.

Meena is a senior majoring in Neuroscience and Spanish. She joined the Nguyen Lab to pursue her interest of exploring the development and maintenance of substance use disorders, specifically to understand the role of physiological and behavioral changes resulting from opiate and cannabinoid usage. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in surgery, where she can apply her understand of safe and effective opiate usage.

Savannah Fish

Savannah is a senior Neuroscience major from Belton, Texas. She is interested the neurobiology of the sensory system, specifically nociception’s implication with substance abuse. Savannah hopes to complete a Ph.D. in developmental neuroscience and one day become a full-time lecturer. She is passionate about enhancing higher education to enrich the learning environment for students of all backgrounds. In addition to research, Savannah is a Staff Assistant for the Golden Wave Band, Section Leader for the Symphonic Band Bassoons, and a member of Nu Rho Psi.

Kaitlyn Rojas

Kaitlyn Rojas is a junior Neuroscience major pursuing a biochemistry minor. Kaitlyn plans to complete a dual degree M.D.-Ph.D. program post-graduation with the goal of becoming the PI of her own lab, bridging the gap between basic science, translational, and clinical research on substance use disorder. She is most interested in exploring the role of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in modulating opioid use disorder and hopes to continue research in neuropharmacology and addiction mechanisms in the future. At Baylor, Kaitlyn is a McNair Scholar, a Supplemental Instructor for the Introduction to Neuroscience course, a peer leader for the Psychology and Neuroscience Department’s New Student Experience course, a pre-health mentor, President and Co-Founder of the Neuroscience Journal Club, Vice-President of the Medical Ethics Discussion Society (MEDS), and a member of Nu Rho Psi. In her free time, she enjoys journaling, reading, and listening to music.

Claire Joseph

Junior

Claire Joseph is a junior from Overland Park, Kansas. She is a Business Fellow on the pre-medical track also pursuing a certification in Medical Spanish. Following graduation, she plans to pursue medical school with the hopes of serving patients in underserved communities. Claire joined the Nguyen Lab to better understand the cycles of addiction and substance use disorders to be able to be a better physician for the many struggling with these issues in her desired patient demographic. Outside the lab, Claire is the co-director of the Leadership Team through the Pre-Health office, serves as the president of MEDLIFE, is a Millennium Fellow and Baylor Engage Fellow through the Office of Engaged Learning, and is involved in organizations such as Alpha Epsilon Delta, and attends bible study regularly at her church, St. Peter’s Catholic Student Center.

Aliyah Ogden

Aliyah Ogden is a senior Science Research Fellow from Algonquin, Illinois with concentrations in neuroscience and biology. She also is pursuing a minor in religion. Aliyah is President of the Neuroscience Student Association and is involved in the Crane Scholars Program. She is also a Goldwater Scholar. She also conducted research at University College Dublin for Professor Keith Murphy in the Neurotherapeutics Research Group. Aliyah worked closely with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to continue working in the field of addiction neuroscience work and contributed to research projects investigating the validity of psychedelic substances in the treatment of cocaine addiction. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a PhD and continue research in the field of addiction neuroscience. In her free time, she loves writing poetry, reading, hiking, and rock climbing. She is looking forward to growing as a researcher in The Neuroscience of Addiction Lab and learning about the specific neurobiology involved in drug abuse.

Joshua Li is a senior from Frisco, Texas majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Biochemistry. After graduation, he plans to attend medical school with hopes of becoming an emergency medicine physician. Josh is interested in researching the neurobiological mechanisms and behavioral effects of caffeine addiction and withdrawal. Outside of Baylor, Josh plays the drums as a member of the worship team at his church and regularly serves in their college student ministry. He also works as an EMT with AMR Waco and enjoys volunteering at various Baylor events. In his free time, Josh enjoys spending time in nature, reading, and visiting new restaurants.

Sophia Wright is a junior University Scholars major with concentrations in neuroscience, biochemistry, and philosophy. She is also on the pre-med track and a member of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core. Sophia is a committed member of BRH choir and the Medical Ethics Discussion Society and is a Getterman Scholar. Upon graduation, Sophia plans to complete an MD-PhD program and pursue a career in neuroscience research. In her free time, Sophia enjoys baking, playing board games, and long-distance running

Emily Nguyen is a junior majoring in Biology and minoring in Nutrition and American Sign Language on the Pre-Med track. She currently serves as the Events Coordinator in the Global Medical Missions Alliance organization on campus, a Learning Assistant for Genetics, and a Pre-health Mentor. She also actively volunteers with the Mission Waco Clinic. She joined the lab to pursue her interest in substance abuse and the mechanisms underlying addiction with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of neuroscience and pharmacology as she considers a future in research. After graduating, Emily plans on attending medical school to pursue a career in medical missions. In her free time, she enjoys running, playing games, and watching movies.

Sophia Ontanillas is a sophomore Science Research Fellow from Las Vegas, Nevada. She has a concentration in neuroscience and aspires to become a psychiatrist. Sophia joined the Nguyen Lab because she is interested in understanding the mechanisms behind addiction and how addiction manifests in underserved and developing areas. Outside of class, she dances traditional dances in the Filipino Student Association and is the mission trip chair for the Multicultural Association of Prehealth Students, currently planning to lead a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. In her spare time, she loves to read, cross-stitch, and attend her small group with Highland Baptist Church.

Sarah Gee is a senior Psychology major from Annapolis, Maryland with a strong passion for neuroscience, particularly the circuit-based approach to understanding brain function. She joined the Nguyen Lab to pursue her interest in the neurobiology of addiction and to further explore how addictive behaviors manifest in the brain, as well as how targeting specific neural circuits and regions may help alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Outside of the lab, Sarah volunteers at the Talitha Koum Institute, a mental health therapeutic nurture center that focuses on supporting the brain development of at-risk children from infancy to five years old. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in neuropsychology, where she hopes to continue researching the neural mechanisms underlying behavior and developing innovative approaches to treatment. In her free time, Sarah enjoys running, cooking, and playing both the guitar and piano.

Emily Nguyen is a junior from Sugar Land, Texas majoring as a Science Research Fellow, with minors in Child Family Studies and Biochemistry. Her research interests involve primarily the neurobiology behind caffeine addiction in polysubstance use. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school to pursue a career as a physician in pediatrics. At Baylor, she’s the external vice president for the Vietnamese Student Association, the historian for Alpha Epsilon Delta, and the social chair for the Neuroscience Student Association. At home, she works as a medical assistant and teaches piano lessons.  In her free time, she likes going to restaurants with friends, playing pickleball, and beating claw machines.

Eric Wang is a junior Health Science Studies major pursuing a biochemistry minor on the pre-medical track with plans on pursuing future research. Eric joined the Nguyen lab to understand better the neurobiological circuits that affect addiction and substance use disorder to be a more understanding physician. At Baylor, he is a committed Supplemental Instructor, a Supplemental Instructor mentor, and a Learning Assistant. Eric is a member of the Baylor University Concert Choir and organizations such as Alpha Epsilon Delta, Mu Phi Epsilon, VSA, Baylor Chess Society, and MEDS. Outside of Baylor, he is a clinical assistant for the North Richardson Family Clinic and a volunteer in the Texas Community Clinic and Waco Family Medicine. He also loves working in the Wang Lab for Biomedical Research in UT Austin under their post-doctoral fellows. In his free time, Eric loves skiing, taking long drives, weight lifting, eating, listening to music, and sleeping.

Hailey Collins is a sophomore pursuing a major in neuroscience and a minor in mathematics in the Honors Program. She is an officer with Nutrition Outreach Waco and is a Getterman Fellow and mentor. Hailey joined the Neuroscience of Addiction Lab because she aspires to potentiate mental illness treatment with the use of unconventional drugs. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school for neuroscience and become a researcher and professor. When not in class, Hailey loves crocheting, playing violin, and having fun with her friends.
