George Herbert and America

I recently worked on some famous lines of the English poet George Herbert about his vision for the American colonies, and particularly his famous and much quoted lines

Religion stands on tip-toe in our land,

Readie to passe to the American strand.

A few lines later, he continues,

Then shall Religion to America flee:

They have their times of Gospel, ev’n as we.

I did a substantial piece on this, which I now include under the title “Then Shall Religion To America Flee: George Herbert and the Church Militant.” I will include it as a pdf, but also in the form of a document, so that anyone interested can follow up all the internal links.
