I offer the following in what we might call the spirit of intellectual archaeology. Back in 2003, when velociraptors roamed the Earth, I had what I thought was a bright idea for a book project titled Occult City: Alternative Spiritualities in an American Metropolis, 1880-1940, the city in question being Philadelphia. That seemed sensible because I had in the previous years been so saturated in Philadelphia area archives and libraries. For multiple reasons, the book never happened, but when I look at the outline today, it actually seems pretty interesting. That is especially true because so many books on the occult and esoteric in that era focus on the West Coast. Of course, there is vastly more literature on all this today than there was back then. But who knows, maybe someone would still like to take this up.
