Swirl-Stabilized Gas Turbine Combustion

Utilizes model gas turbine burner with designed novel components to run experimental burns of various gaseous and liquid fuels. Capable of lean-premixed and complete combustion with near-zero emissions and high fuel flexibility.

Atomization and Sprays Testing

Allows for quantitative investigation of atomization and sprays, and other multi-phase flows with high spatiotemporal resolutions using a state-of-the-art, ultra-fast optical diagnostics system.

Cutting-Edge Flow and Combustion Research Equipment

State-of-the-Art High Repetition Rate Systems
  • Solid-State Laser Systems – 50kHz continuous operation
    • Highest rates limited in available species (e.g. OH, NO, CH)
  • High-fidelity velocity measurement with PIV
Pump Laser for Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV)
  • Dual-head DX-532-48, 48 W x 2 with pulse-overlap ability.
  • High repetition rate (single shot up to 300 kHz) with short pulse duration (10 ns at 50 kHz, <20 ns at 100 kHz ) and ~ 200 ns time interval between the two heads
    • Enabling resolution of high-turbulence and high-velocity flows vs a typical high-speed PIV laser (Hawk laser) at ~ 20 kHz with ~ 150 ns pulse duration, 1 μs time-interval
  • 6x thinner laser sheet than the Hawk laser
    • for example, 160 microns vs. 1mm for a typical 200 mm focal length
    • High light intensity in a field of view (eg: 1 mj energy from DX laser offers the same brightness at 6 mj from the Hawk)
    • Minimizing out-of-plane noise for better accuracy
  • Therefore, high-fidelity velocity/flow structure measurements
Dye Laser for Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF)
  • LiopStarHQ
    • Newest high-speed dye laser on the market
    • Highly accurate auto-tracking
    • Smooth and ergonomic software and electronic controls
  • Operation up to 100kHz
  • Configured for 283nm (OH)
    • Upgradeable to other combustion wavelengths
High-Speed Intensified Imaging System
  • Image Intensifier
    • S20 UV Photocathode
    • 10us decay phosphor
    • Up to 100kHz operation
    • Gain of 150,000+
    • Applicable to all combustion species
    • F2.8 UV Lens
  • Phantom V2012
    • 1280 x 800 pixels resolution at up to 22,600 FPS. 512 x 384 at 89,500 FPS
