What should I do once I’m accepted?

US Passport

As soon as possible, find your current passport and confirm it will still be valid three months after we return. If you need to get a new passport or renew an expired or expiring passport, I’ve provided some notes here:

Vaccinations

The CDC has a few recommendations for travelers to Peru that I want our group to follow – not a requirement, just a strong recommendation. You can review the CDC discussion of health issues here:

We will NOT be traveling to any area where malaria and yellow fever are a problem.

The Baylor Health Center (in the SLC) is an easy way to get these shots if you need them. Call (254) 710-1010 to make an appointment.

Here are the recommended vaccinations:

  • Routine vaccinations: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (TDaP), varicella (chickenpox), polio, and an annual flu shot
  • Hepatitis A – to protect from contaminated food or water (good for life, but you may want to consult your doctor)
  • Typhoid – also to protect from contaminated food or water (good for 2 years)

Most of you have probably received the hepatitis A vaccine already because it has been recommended for children for many years. Find out your hepatitis A status soon because it requires two shots taken six months apart (e.g., first shot in November, second shot in May).

Plane Tickets

Students will purchase international plane tickets (i.e., round-trip USA-Lima) on their own. Once you’re in Peru, I’ll take care of the domestic round-trip flight Lima-Cusco.

I will let everyone know my international flight plan early in the spring (around February 1st), in plenty time for you to get on my flight.

However, you are not required to travel to Lima on my flight. Another airport or airline may work better for you. Feel free to make a plan that fits your schedule and budget. Please follow these guidelines in planning your flight…

  • FIRST DAY: Arrive in Lima on June 2, 2020 by 8:40 pm or earlier
  • Our destination in Lima is Jorge Chávez International Airport.
  • Try to arrive before or as close as possible to my landing. If your flight arrives after my plane, you will have to taxi to the hotel on your own. A taxi from the airport will cost about $25 and take about 45 minutes.
  • LAST DAY: Our group flight from Cusco will land in Lima on July 6, 2020 about 7:30 pm, so do NOT buy a ticket departing Lima before 9:30 pm. Most overnight flights start departing around 10:30 pm.
  • If you have to stay overnight in Lima on the way back to the US, you will be on your own. I recommend staying at the Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport because it is basically in the parking lot of  the airport.

Summer Registration

When you see your advisor in the spring, be sure to ask him or her to set your advising flag for the summer as well as for the fall semester.

I have to document prerequisites and request permits before you can actually register for your summer courses. So, don’t worry if you can’t register for them when your registration period first opens. I’ll send an email letting you know when you are ready to add them to your schedule.

GBL 1102 – Intercultural Competence Abroad

Baylor automatically enrolls all students studying abroad in Intercultural Competence Abroad. The course asks you to reflect on some cultural experiences while you are abroad and write short essays about your insights. While your e-bill will reflect a charge for this one-semester hour of credit, you will also see a credit equal to that same amount. The Center for Global Engagement provides a scholarship that equals the tuition for that course, making it a free credit.

Spanish Prerequisites

First SPA course  –  If you do not have credit for SPA 1301 or something permitting you placement above that level, you will be enrolled in SPA 1301. If you will be taking your first Spanish course in Peru and wish to start higher than SPA 1301, you should provide documentation showing eligibility, or you should take the Spanish Language Placement Exam. You can learn more about the placement exam here:

Prerequisite in Spring  –  If you will be taking the prerequisite SPA course in the spring before our summer trip, you will be allowed to register for the next level in Peru. For example, taking SPA 1302 in the spring semester and taking SPA 2310 in the summer. You will need to send me a degree audit in January or February showing that prerequisite “in progress.” However, if you withdraw or fail to get credit for the spring semester course, you will be automatically registered to retake that course in Peru.

Prerequisite in Minimester at Baylor  –  If you will be taking the prerequisite SPA course in the May Minimester at Baylor, you will need to register for that course and send me an updated degree audit before I can create the permit for the next level in Peru. However, if you withdraw or fail to get credit, you will be automatically registered to retake that course in Peru.

Prerequisite in summer away from Baylor –  You are NOT allowed to take a prerequisite Spanish course way from Baylor in the summer before our Peru trip. It is not possible to complete a course away and have the credit transferred to Baylor before it is time to start the course in Peru.

You must pay your summer e-bill in full to participate in Baylor in Peru.

Class Preparation

There are a few things you’ll need for your summer classes:

  • The Last Days of the Incas by Kim MacQuarrie (2008, Simon & Schuster, ISBN: 0743260503), either an e-book or hardcopy is fine. All students will be required to read this book and take an online quiz, preferably before departure.
  • Personal Computer or tablet with internet access and word processing
  • other requirements will be described in your course syllabi

Final Documents

Go back into BearsAbroad and complete the Post-Decision Materials. It will ask you to upload some things and just some other things…

  • flight itinerary
  • Form A: Adult Participation and General Release
  • Form B: Medical Release
  • Form C: Baylor Code of Conduct Acknowledgement

If you have any accommodations through OALA that you would like to use while in Peru, we are happy to work with you to find suitable solutions. Please contact the program director soon after acceptance to provide forms and to discuss a plan.
