Do the courses match my major?

Everyone will take two courses…

  1. Spanish class (SPA 1301, 1302, 2310, 2320, or 3302)
  2. Travel Writing  (ENG 3378)

NOTE: You should talk to an advisor in your program to be sure our courses work with your graduation plan. 

In general, these courses can work with…

BBA (all business majors)

  • Both courses will satisfy Communication Option requirements (6 hours)…
    • SPA 1301, 1302, 2310, 2320, or 3302 satisfies option (2): take one Foreign Language course (meaning any level of any language is accepted).
    • ENG 3378 satisfies option (2): ENG 3000-400 level course
    • Note that the Communication Option is different from the requirement to take one of the speech/communication classes: CSS 1301, 1302, or 1304.

ECS (all engineering and computer science majors)

  • All ECS majors must complete a modern foreign language through the 2nd semester

Social Work (all BSW majors)

  • all BSW majors must complete a foreign language through the 4th semester
  • ENG 3378 will count toward the 36 required upper-level credits

Education

  • All Education majors require “Second semester proficiency in a modern or classical language”
  • ENG 3378 counts as an upper-level course for students pursuing an English concentration

BA & BS

  • All BA & BS degrees require 3 semesters of a foreign language
    • the Spanish courses will count toward this requirement

Sociology

  • the Spanish courses will count toward the Foreign Language and Culture requirement on the BA

Religion

  • the Spanish courses will count toward the Foreign Language and Culture requirement on the BA

English

  • the Spanish courses will count toward the Foreign Language and Culture requirement on the BA
  • ENG 3378: will satisfy major requirement (E), which calls for “Nine semester hours of additional 3000 – 4000 level English electives”
  • For an English minor, ENG 3378 will satisfy minor requirement (D), which calls for “Six semester hours of 3000 or 4000 level English electives”

Professional Writing & Rhetoric

  • the Spanish courses will count toward the Foreign Language and Culture requirement on the BA
  • ENG 3378: will satisfy major requirement “English Department Electives (Non-PWR Courses): Choose one course from 3000 or 4000 level ENG literature, creative writing, or linguistics courses”

Linguistics

  • the Spanish courses will count toward the Foreign Language and Culture requirement on the BA
  • Linguistics majors may take a Quechua language course to satisfy one of their Less Commonly Studied (LCS) language requirements (an extra fee may apply). LING majors may also take Independent Study in Linguistics (LING 4v20) as their 2nd course. This course will be an independent research class on some some aspect of Quechua.

Spanish

  • SPA 1301, 1302, 2310, and 2320: All upper-level SPA courses require completion through 2320
  • SPA 3302 (Conversation & Composition): This upper-level course satisfies part of the Spanish major and the Spanish minor.

Other majors…

  • SPA 1301, 1302, 2310, 2320, or 3302: will satisfy part of the language degree requirement for all BA, BS, BFA, BSI, BSFCS, BM (not voice majors), BME, and BSW degrees
  • SPA 1302, 2310, or 2320: will complete the language degree requirement for BSCS, BSE, BSECE, BSME, BSW, and BSN
  • BM (Bachelor of Music) will accept ENG 3378 as satisfying the “Additional Requirement… humanities”
  • All BA, BS, BSW and BFA majors need at least 36 upper-level credits. If you do not get all 36 credits through other required coursework, ENG 3378 or SOC 3309 will give you 3 hours of upper-level credits
